Homophones

Homophones are words that SOUND the same but are spelt differently and mean different things. 'Their', 'there' and 'they're' all sound the same, but they mean very different things.

Minimal pairs

Minimal pairs are two words that differ by just ONE sound. 'Bit' and 'beat' differ by the vowel. 'Ship' and 'sip' differ by the middle sound. Practising minimal pairs sharpens your ear.

Consonant clusters and triphthongs

A consonant cluster is two or three consonants together: 'str-eet', 'spl-ash'. A triphthong is three vowel sounds gliding together in one syllable: 'fire', 'hour', 'flower'.
