Numbers to the RIGHT of zero are positive: 1, 2, 3 … Numbers to the LEFT are negative: −1, −2, −3 … Think of a thermometer — below 0 is negative (cold), above 0 is positive (warm).

The more negative a number, the SMALLER it is. −8 is smaller than −3, because −8 is further left of zero. But careful: −3 is BIGGER than −8!
